PROJECT 04: An Ecological Study on Sunda Pangolin Population in Gaya Island, Sabah.
On the February 2018, the Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica) has been upgraded as one of the fully protected species in Sabah joining the similar rank of orangutan, sun bear and other iconic species under the Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997. Over the years, the number of individual of this species has been found to be drastically reduced due to the illegal hunting activities. As such, it is also listed under the Critically Endangered status in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) RedList. Thus, this has risen a concern for an immediate research and conservation work to be done in Sabah. Therefore, we grateful to receive sponsorship from the Pangolin Consortium for our upcoming project that is focusing on the ecology of Sunda Pangolin population in Gaya Island.
